Lake Volta

February 20, 2022

After our visit to Cedi Beads, we drove up further north for an hour and arrived at Akosombo where the dam is.  It was built from 1961 to 1965 to create Lake Volta.  We stayed at the Volta Hotel Akosombo, one of the best we have seen in Ghana.  The picture above is from the dining room of the Hotel, with the dam and Lake in the distance.

It was great to relax, mingle with our friends and get to know them better.  We work together and see each other often, but with events like this we are able to get to know each other better.  We arrived at the hotel Friday night and then took the cruise the next day on the Lake.

Another view of the lake from our hotel balcony.

The upper floor of the boat where the band was set up.  The crew guided us to the floor, and it didn't take much time for me to find the main level dining area as soon as the band cranked up for the big send off and beginning of our adventure.  I could hear and feel too much of the music.  The band was good, and I like live music, but not when I am so close to the speakers.

Dodi Island, where we sailed to and from the dock near the dam.

There was this camel on the island, and since it was there and we had not ridden one before, Elaine and I just  had to do it.  So here it is.

The cruise was worth doing.  The Lake is so big and we saw just a small portion of it on our 2 1/2 hour cruise up and then2 1/2 hours back.  The day was sunny, no wind, and the water was smooth, no rocking at all.  The government is in the process of building a big rail system from Accra up to the Volta.  At the Volta, they are building a port where goods can be shipped up north and from the north.  Then moved on rail to and from the southern regions.  A huge project.

At the hotel we happened to speak with one of the workers who said he is wanting to start his own church.  Enoch is his name.  Nice name.  He noticed my tag.  I had to ask him if he was Pentecostal and needed to buy the musical instruments as part of getting started.  The Pentecostals here love the loud music.  It is cranked up as part of their worship services.  They love it and feel the spirit I guess.  He said yes.  I asked if he knew anything about our Church.  A little.  I asked if he believed in the Bible, the Old and New Testaments.  He said yes.  I then told him we have a book which is another testament of the Savior.  He was very interested, so I pulled a copy out of the truck (we were in the parking lot) and explained where he could read about the Savior's visit to the people in America, and dog-eared the account in 3rd Nephi.  He wanted my phone number.  Maybe he will call.  If so, I will connect him with the young missionaries.

I have given a Book of Mormon to the lady by a Zenith bank branch who runs a small fruit stand where we buy some of our fruit.  She was interested in the Church and especially the book.  We talk each time I buy fruit.  She is a preacher in her church.  Don't know which one.  She keeps the book by her bed and reads every night.  That's what she said.  I hope she does.  She might have some disturbing dreams about what she is reading.  I hope she does.  That is until she ponders the teachings and decides it sounds good.  Better than what she currently has.

We sometimes don't realize just what we have.

Have a nice month.
