O Sole Mio!

Last June (2021), on the 12th in fact, we were in Abidjan, Cote 'd Voire, involved in training our A2AAs or audit managers who live in Cote 'd Voire.  They speak French there and I spoke English there out of necessity to be understood.  Good thing Mermoz Amani speaks both languages.

June 12 is our wedding anniversary.  Monday, June 14, after the District visits, we had the driver drop us off in Assinie-Mafia a coastal area that is a favorite resort for the well-to-do who get out of Abidjan to vacation there.

After our District leadership visits, we had the driver drop Elaine and I off there at a very small resort on the beach where we could enjoy our wedding anniversary together.  Atobora and Mermoz were not sure about leaving us there alone.  It was easy to see on their faces.  I convinced them we would be fine.  The big deal was getting a ride to Abidjan on Wednesday morning to catch our flight back to Accra.  I had already arranged for that through the resort.  They relented and returned to Abidjan, and Elaine and I started our adventure at O Sole Mio!

We took a short ride from the parking lot across and down the street, then onto the sand to the resort on a Kawasaki 800.

The place has five rooms, its own restaurant, a mostly private beach, locals living on all sides, fishermen and their boats next door, and miles of beaches on either side.  There was nothing to do but sleep, eat, walk the beach, relax on the beach, then do it all over again.  The food was really good.  The service was good.  l had to borrow the restaurant's modem every night to get internet in the room, then return it at breakfast.

Tony the owner, Ifi the dachshund, Clarice, Atsu the employees, chickens, frites, bread, tomatoes and mozzarella, chocolate moose, constant waves on the beach, beach lounge chairs, star gazing at the Southern Cross (just a bit off perfect south), kids playing on the beach, some naked, some not, fishermen taking their boats out then back in, waves making it a challenge but they face it daily.

Tony and Ifi.  Tony speaks mostly French and a tiny English.  Ifi doesn't speak either. After a friendly visit one evening, we gave Tony a Book of Mormon.  A wasn't too familiar with the Church, then.  The next morning he commented about the Church and said "Joseph Smith".  Once again a prophecy coming true.  Tony is 69 and reminded a little of Jeff Anderson.

O Sole Mio!

Che bella cosa na jurnata ’e sole,
n’aria serena doppo na tempesta!
Pe’ ll’aria fresca pare già na festa...
Che bella cosa na jurnata ’e sole.

Refrain
Ma n’atu sole cchiù bello, oi ne’,[10]
’o sole mio sta nfronte a te!
  ’o sole, ’o sole mio
sta nfronte a te, sta nfronte a te!

What a beautiful thing is a sunny day!
The air is serene after a storm,
The air is so fresh that it already feels like a celebration.
What a beautiful thing is a sunny day!

But another sun, even more beauteous, oh my sweetheart,
My own sun, shines from your face!
  This sun, my own sun,
Shines from your face; It shines from your face!

Happy anniversary Sweetie!
