Our First Cape Coast Adventure - episode 7 - Elmina Castle & the Boats

 Saturday afternoon, May 15, 2021

After the training, we picked up the Kittelsons and drove off to visit another castle, this one in Elmina: the Elmina Castle.  Bigger and better than the Cape Coast Castle, I think.  The same stories were told about how the castle was used.  It is located west of the other castle.  You can see the other castle way off in the distance.  The usual salespeople outside the castle.  Pressure tactics used.  Didn’t buy a thing. 

The drive to the Castle took us through town.  We saw this familiar sign.


That black sign at the end of the street.  Welcome to the church house in downtown Elmina.  Everyone is welcome.

The Castle was bigger than Cape Coast Castle in my estimation.



I took this just because it looked cool.  A solitary soul again the water and rocks.  She was down by the waters edge and we were on the Castle looking down.  Kind of gave me the feeling of the loneliness felt by so many who lived through the Castle's active days.

The best thing about Elmina was harbor and the boats.  So many.  So colorful.  So noisy.  So chaotic.  Down by the harbor.

















I was mesmerized by all of this.  Out to fish.  Out to earn a living.  Out for a day's adventure.

Today is Ghana's Memorial Day when they remember the guy who helped them gain freedom as a country.  Can't remember his name.  It is September 21, 2021.  The mountains of Utah are turning colors and we decided to enjoy the holiday (and the first day of Fall) by going to Aburi and seeing the Oboadaka Falls. Aburi is north of Accra about fifty minutes without much traffic, in the mountains, and always green because it rains there all the time according to Yao.  Yao is Gabriel's brother-in-law.  Gabriel works for the Church and works with the Woodbury's who are the Area's humanitarian missionaries.   We have traveled a lot with them recently. Gabriel and the Woodbury's picked us up at our apartment compound this morning and we headed up. Our last day in AWA / Our first day home

Our last day in Accra went like this: Sunday, July 24, 2022 Our good friends, Greg and Debbie Lewis, offered to drive us to their ward to enjoy the meetings.  We had not visited that ward before so it would work out great.  We could take the sacrament and also meet with the bishop.  We went to the Bethlehem Ward, Ashaiman Bethlehem Stake.  The bishop is Samuel Fiifi Qudjo.  A good man who knows what he is doing and takes his responsibilities seriously.  He and I had a good visit.  I gave him several copies of the Africa West Area Financial Integrity Guidelines and went over it with him.  He had seen the first page before but didn't have a copy of the whole document.  He also wanted it in electronic form.  I sent that to him later in the day. The awesome Alema Court guards and gardeners

Richard Dadzie (King Richard) Daniel Aboni Other guards and gardeners were: Emmanuel Offei John Kesseh Bernard Nketia Kwame Amenu James, Fordjour, Bruce Emmanuel We don't have pictures of all the guards and gardeners we have gotten to know.  Just Richard and Daniel.  Richard and Daniel are two of our favorites.  We got to know them well.  These men work outside all day at the gate and take 12-hour shifts letting cars in and out of the compound, weeding the gardens, mowing the lawn (it feels so good to hear the sound of a real lawn mower.  The simple things we miss!).  And taking care of the pool and generally keeping things clean.  It is good to know that strangers cannot come and go.  There is tall wall all around the compound with an electric fence on top.  Not sure the electricity is turned on, though.  We wouldn't be surprised to find out it is mostly for show.  Just about every business, residence and church has barbed wire or ...
