Our First Cape Coast Adventure, episode 4 - High, among the treetops

Friday, May 14, 2021

We had to say good bye to Bennett.  I hope to see him again.  Soon.

Our breakfast from the Beach Resort was settling in and we settled in for a drive on to Kakum National Forest.  It is situated north of Cape Coast about thirty minutes on a descent road.  Not an impressive welcome like you would expect at a national park like Yellowstone, so learn to ramp down those expectations and you will be content.  The welcome was a guy in a small hut at the entrance who collects a few Ghana Cedis from each car.

It felt good to be in the mountains, in a forest.  They are not really mountains, just hills wanting to be big.  The forest is very thick, like one expects a jungle to be.  The biggest trees are exceptionally tall and elegant shooting up above the other, less elegant, trees around them.  The literature indicates it is a bird watcher's paradise.  One can also see some wildlife like antelopes and even elephants, but they were nonexistent at this entrance to the Park.  We will have to go elsewhere, maybe Mole National Park way up north to see African wildlife.

Once you pay your fee here to take the walk,

you walk a short distance to this spot to wait for your guide.  A restaurant is to the right and a gift shop to the left.

Here is our guide.

Here are some pictures on the trail.

(Where's Grandpa?)

Some years ago, two Canadians and four Ghanaians built what they call a “canopy walk” in this area.  It is a series of seven rope bridges with a twelve-inch plank running down the middle to walk on.  It is supported by some wire rope as well, so walks are safe and sturdy.  The bridges are up to 130 feet above the forest floor.  Fun.  Missionary friends have been here and told us a little about it.  They did not mention, however, the long walk from the staging point up a rock covered path with many steps to get to the bridges.  The steep walk was unexpected and gave us a chance to see some of the forest before we enjoyed the canopy walk.  I enjoyed it.  I will do this again.  It is tough to express how fun it is.

Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what it was like.

On our way down the trail:

After this experience, we enjoyed a PB&J sandwich in the truck in the parking lot and then drove on for Cape Coast and the Ridge Royal Hotel.

This was only the end of Friday.  Saturday and Sunday are coming!
