Our First Cape Coast Adventure, episode 3 - Morning sunrise

I dreamed of fish eating ME all night.  No, that's not true.  I don't remember what I dreamed. 

The next morning Elaine and I took a walk on the beach to see the sunrise.  Nice and cool with that ocean breeze.  A fisherman off in the distance was maneuvering his large canoe, setting out for a day of ocean fishing.  We got some good pictures.

 









After the walk, and before breakfast, I was sitting on the front porch of our place while Elaine was inside getting ready.  A young resort worker came by. We said hello to each other.  He stopped and said he was a member of the church.  He is a server in the restaurant.  Bennett is his name.  He is 17, a priest in the Yamansa ward.  I smiled back and said I was a high priest.  He smiled in return.  I asked if he attended church.  He said no. Work is too busy on Sunday to do that.  However, he smiled broadly and said, “I pay my tithing”.  I am sooo impressed!  These people are poor!  Their living standard is way down there.  This young, truly stalwart, member is paying his tithing!  I love him.  And I told him so.  I wish I had a picture.  He started off to resume his duties and just before he turned the corner of the building, waved at me with a big smile.  I waved back. 

After a very good breakfast buffet which included Sobolo to drink and a Spanish omelet among other tasty things, we left for the highway and then east for the Kakum National Forest, Cape Coast, our hotel room at the Ridge Royal Hotel, and a visit to the Cape Coast Castle.

Aburi & Oboadaka Falls

Today is Ghana's Memorial Day when they remember the guy who helped them gain freedom as a country.  Can't remember his name.  It is September 21, 2021.  The mountains of Utah are turning colors and we decided to enjoy the holiday (and the first day of Fall) by going to Aburi and seeing the Oboadaka Falls. Aburi is north of Accra about fifty minutes without much traffic, in the mountains, and always green because it rains there all the time according to Yao.  Yao is Gabriel's brother-in-law.  Gabriel works for the Church and works with the Woodbury's who are the Area's humanitarian missionaries.   We have traveled a lot with them recently. Gabriel and the Woodbury's picked us up at our apartment compound this morning and we headed up. Our last day in AWA / Our first day home

Our last day in Accra went like this: Sunday, July 24, 2022 Our good friends, Greg and Debbie Lewis, offered to drive us to their ward to enjoy the meetings.  We had not visited that ward before so it would work out great.  We could take the sacrament and also meet with the bishop.  We went to the Bethlehem Ward, Ashaiman Bethlehem Stake.  The bishop is Samuel Fiifi Qudjo.  A good man who knows what he is doing and takes his responsibilities seriously.  He and I had a good visit.  I gave him several copies of the Africa West Area Financial Integrity Guidelines and went over it with him.  He had seen the first page before but didn't have a copy of the whole document.  He also wanted it in electronic form.  I sent that to him later in the day. Things Learned in Africa

  A few things learned or emphasized while serving a full-time mission in the Africa West Area. It is a super challenge to capsulize one’s 18-month experience serving as an ordained full-time missionary in these latter-days in just a few thoughts and words.   Here are some of the thoughts that stand out. There's a difference between having a testimony and being converted.   Conversion is the outward expression of an inner testimony.   A testimony must be lived to be of any effect. Agency is still absolute. Jesus is the Christ.   We all need him.   We need the atonement to be effective in our life.  That's why keeping covenants is so important. A chaotic society is that way for a reason: it is earned.  Same with a progressive society; it is earned.  By their fruits ye shall know them.   Some decisions made a long time ago helped bring this about.   The gospel is the surest and most lasting answer to make society better, and e...
