March 6 is Ghana's Independence Day

This year Ghana's independence day was on Saturday, March 6.   The holiday was celebrated on Monday so people could take the day off of work.  There were no public celebrations like the fireworks we do in the states.  My friend Komla said the president said there should be no public celebrations because of Covid-19 so there were none.

We decided to do something different on Monday.  We hadn't seen any beaches and since we live close to the ocean, that's what we decided to do.  I checked out local beaches from various websites and decided to tryout Sakumono Beach.  Not too far from us but still a long drive for us.  The longest drive so far on our own.  It is southeast of us.

Like most touristy things we have seen so far, it isn't what it ought to be.  Beaches are a natural resource and are a natural gathering place for people who want to spend some time in the sun on a free day, however, that concept either hasn't caught on or, more likely the case, the government does have the money to spend on improving the area to make it attractive.

We are glad we went.  It felt good to see the ocean, walk on the sand, see people enjoying the water and the other sites there.   Here are a few pictures of the place.

These boats are in use.  You can from the nets.  The fisherman can leave to fish any day but Tuesday.  They stay out for a long.  One week, two or even three.  I have more boat pictures on an upcoming post.

Yes, this is what the area has to offer in terms of a snack bar or restaurant.  It works.

We saw these kids as we were leaving.  Someone brought a horse to either give rides or sell rides.  We didn't ask.   The guy on the right with the basket on his head is selling a product. This product happens to be eggs.  Not sure I would buy eggs from a guy on the beach when the eggs have been on his head in the summer sun for a while.  This is the preferred way to carry and market your products.  After being here now for over a month.  It looks natural and makes sense.  You can carry a lot of stuff up there.

We will likely visit here again sometime.  There are other beaches to explore first.

On the ride back home, we came across a shopping center called The Junction.  It is the most organized and cleanest one we have seen.  There was a parking lot sale going on with tents set up.  All women's wear and accessories.  We were the only ones looking at that particular time. All the shops are entered from the sidewalk; like a big strip mall back home.  We roamed around a little at one end and bought some things from a grocery store.  They sell bottled milk from a cooler in there.  That's unusual.

That was our independence day activity.  When Covid-19 is under control, there may be fireworks, next year.

  1. It reminds us a lot of Malaysia. So glad you are able to do some exploring.
