Danfa ward where things are good
Sunday, March 28, 2021.
We made a call last night to Bishop Mensah of the Danfa ward. It is about 30 minutes north of us on a good traffic day. Last night Google maps showed 45 minutes. As usual, we chose the ward at random from the meetinghouselocator app on Tools.
The traffic was good this morning. The closer we got to the ward house, the heavier the traffic in the opposite direction. Most of the traffic looked to be people going to church. There is, however, a bustling business for food and goods along the highway and streets.
We arrived and met two young men assigned to help members and visitors wash their hands before entering the building. It was Ebenezer and Godwe ("God we"). They looked sharp in their dark pants, white shirts and ties. It is a big building compared to others we have seen. The chapel is upstairs. We met the bishop upstairs. He said hello and asked, "Do I look familiar?". Good grief. He is wearing a mask and has this dark complexion. A little shorter than Ross. We looked at each other and said, maybe. It is Bishop Mensah. He works at the Area office on the other side of the 1st level from us. He works in facilities arranging for repairs, improvements, and certain equipment for the meeting houses. A great guy. He and our office neighbor Komla work together. He also works with Charles, one of the young men just outside our office door (Charles and Richard). We laughed. It is good to get even better acquainted with these good people.
The meetings were good. A sister in the audience would sing the first line of the hymn before the conductor got everyone else singing. There was a keyboard up front but no one to play it so we sang "A Capella".
The priesthood meeting as well as the Relief Society meetings were well attended and the members were engaged. Many intelligent and gospel savvy members here.
We told the bishop that we were impressed with the number of priesthood holders and women in attendance. He explained that many families and young people who can are moving out of Accra and into places where they can afford the rent or even buy some land to build a home. This area called Amrahia is one of those places.
The meeting with the finance clerk and the second counselor was great. They are right on script, doing just what they were supposed to do regarding handling donations; receiving and recording. We had a great visit. Brother Watson, the 2nd counselor is from England. He is a pathologist who decided he and his wife needed to move to Ghana. He teaches at a university. His accent is great to listen to. We hope to see them again.
It is so fun to hear of your experiences. I love the fact that you are visiting a new ward each Sunday. What do the people to make a living there?
